Sunrise
I gaze across the vast sea,
Sargasso red and azure blue,
Past the horizon’s molten anvil,
And I remember the story of space
And how distance represents time,
Because Einstein was right about light,
Such that, were you to gaze at a star,
And were it one million lightyears away,
Then you would be seeing it exactly as it appeared
One million years ago. This is true.
I imagine the sea is like space,
And when I gaze out to sea,
I am traveling back in time,
As if through a telescope,
To a simpler place.
I imagine a time when life was in balance.
I gaze across the vast sea,
Sargasso red and azure blue,
And I believe it is truly endless,
And the past stretches back to eternity.
